AirPods Stuck at Half Volume on Mac? Here's the Fix
AirPods usually drop to "half volume" on a Mac because macOS switched them from normal stereo listening into hands-free (headset) mode, the mode built for calls that lets the AirPods microphone work. In that mode sound gets quieter, thinner and lower in quality. Fix it by moving the Mac's input off the AirPods, then boost the app you're listening to if it's still too quiet.
Why this happens
Bluetooth headphones like AirPods work in two ways. When you just listen, macOS uses a high-quality stereo mode. The moment an app wants the AirPods microphone, the connection switches to hands-free mode, which carries audio both ways but at lower quality.
macOS can stay in that mode after the app is done with the mic, or switch into it the moment you open Zoom, FaceTime, Teams, Discord or a browser tab with microphone access. So your AirPods sound like they're at half volume, not because the slider moved, but because the connection quality dropped.
You'll recognize it: audio suddenly gets quiet and muffled, and turning the system volume all the way up barely helps.
The fixes, in order
- Change your input device. Open System Settings > Sound > Input and pick your Mac's built-in microphone (or another mic) instead of the AirPods. This stops macOS from holding the AirPods in headset mode, so output can go back to full quality. This is the most effective fix.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on. A quick reset of the connection often brings back normal stereo audio, especially after a call.
- Reconnect the AirPods. Put them in the case, close the lid, wait a few seconds, open it near the Mac and select them as the output again.
- Quit the app that grabbed the mic. Fully quit Zoom, Teams, Discord, or close the browser tab. Some apps keep the mic open in the background.
- Re-pair from scratch. In System Settings > Bluetooth, click the info button next to the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, then pair again.
- Reset the AirPods. With the AirPods in the case and the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes amber, then white. Pair them again afterwards.
- Update macOS and your AirPods. Software updates can include Bluetooth fixes. AirPods firmware updates install on their own while they charge near a connected device, so leave them in the case near your Mac for a while.
The pattern to watch: if the volume drops the instant you join a call and recovers when the call ends, it's the headset-mode switch, not a broken speaker or a settings glitch.
Why the fix doesn't always stick
macOS switches your AirPods back into headset mode the next time an app uses their microphone, and there's no system setting to turn that off. If you take calls with the AirPods mic, you'll see the quieter sound again during every call. Using a separate microphone for calls avoids it.
There's also a separate issue that often gets mixed up with this one: some apps are simply quieter than others, even at full system volume. A podcast player or a browser video can sit well below what you want while the AirPods are in normal stereo mode. macOS has one volume for everything, so there's no native way to raise just that app.
More on that: AirPods volume too low on Mac.
Boost the quiet app
The input-device fix above handles the Bluetooth side. For an app that is still too quiet, SoundDial gives every running app its own volume slider in the menu bar.
- Boost one app above 100%, up to 200%, without raising the others
- Lower one app without touching the rest
- Mute one app with a click
It works per app, not per browser tab, and doesn't record anything.
The short version
If your AirPods sound quiet and muffled on your Mac, switch your input device away from the AirPods to get them out of headset mode, and re-pair if that fails. If one app is still too soft after that, boost just that app.
